Description

Step back in time on a private journey through the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, one of the most archaeologically rich landscapes in the Southwest. This full-day adventure from Durango is the perfect way to explore the ancient heart of the Four Corners region — where Ancestral Puebloan culture left behind thousands of stories carved in stone.

Begin your day with a scenic drive from Durango to meet your expert guide near the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center. From there, follow your guide caravan-style in your own vehicle through a series of remote canyons and desert mesas. Along the way, you’ll stop at some of the region’s most fascinating sites — including Lowry Pueblo, an 11th-century village with standing walls and kiva structures, and Sand Canyon, where ruins are tucked into the cliffs above winding red rock trails.

Your guide brings the landscape to life with deep knowledge of the region’s history, geology, and ecology. Hear about how the ancient people farmed this arid land, see petroglyphs etched into sandstone, and walk amid structures that have stood for nearly 1,000 years. The private format allows for flexibility — linger where you’re inspired, take photos, or stop for a picnic under the vast desert sky.

It’s a day of discovery designed for travelers who want to dive deeper into the Southwest’s cultural and natural legacy — just a short, scenic drive from Durango.
