Set out on an exhilarating journey as you hop into an open-air Jeep, ready to uncover one of Durango’s hidden gems: La Plata Canyon. This half-day off-road adventure is conveniently located just minutes from downtown, yet it transports you deep into the breathtaking San Juan backcountry. Here, you can enjoy a stress-free experience while soaking in stunning natural beauty.
Your adventure begins with a knowledgeable local guide at the helm, driving along the canyon’s historic mining road. As you follow the La Plata River, you'll wind through majestic tall spruce forests, navigate steep granite cliffs, and traverse vibrant wildflower meadows. Each moment offers a new spectacle of nature’s artistry.
Throughout the journey, your guide will share fascinating stories about the area’s rich history. You’ll learn about the old mining towns that once thrived here, the ancient geological formations, and the Ute people who originally inhabited these valleys. The narrative adds depth to the visual splendor around you.
As the trail ascends, the landscape transforms, revealing cascading waterfalls, intriguing abandoned mines, and various lookout points. From these vantage points, you can see as far as New Mexico on clear days. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife; you might spot deer, marmots, or even the elusive black bear.
This tour reaches elevations of over 10,000 feet, offering awe-inspiring alpine scenery without requiring any hiking. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and accessibility, making it ideal for families, beginners, seniors, or anyone eager to experience the untamed beauty of the wild without committing to a full day.

Do I need to be in good physical shape for this Jeep tour?
While most of this trip is simply riding in a vehicle enjoying views, you'll want to be able to comfortably climb a short step ladder in and out of the vehicle and hold on for a ride that can be bumpy at times. Optional short walks at high elevation to visit scenic viewpoints.
What should I wear and bring on a Jeep tour?
You won’t want to forget your camera, there will be some amazing views!
Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses- although the temperature drops, the sun’s rays become far more intense as you gain elevation so you want to make sure you protect yourself while in our open-air vehicle. Make sure to bring Water- it is very easy to get dehydrated at high elevation. Wear good shoes in case we have time to walk around, bring a rain shell and multiple layers of clothing to stay warm or shed layers as needed.
